🤖 AI Up-Skilling Journey | Experiment 4: Lovable Finance App
AI
⚠️ Warning: This one is more than a quick learning experiment. It is a tool I’ve built for my self and have been using/iterating for the past 2 to 3 months.
🎯 Goal:
When Mint shut down, I spent months bouncing between budgeting tools that never quite fit how I think about money. Some were too rigid, others too limited, and none supported the kind of conscious spending approach my household follows. So instead of compromising, I used Lovable (a no-code/AI app builder) to create my own finance app — a fully personalized money hub I’ve been using and iterating on for the last few months.
🛠️ Tools:
Lovable as the primary app generator and UI layer,
Supabase as the backend database and persistence layer, and
OpenAI API Keys for AI-driven advice, Q&A, and planning.
🗺️ Architecture:
Core features include:
an AI Financial Advisor embedded in the app;
a monthly dashboard for income, expenses, net income, month-over-month trends, and spending by category;
unified net worth tracking across banking and investment accounts; a Year Summary and forecasting view;
and a Conscious Spending section for fixed costs, savings, investments, and guilt-free spending. We are big fans of Ramit Sethi in our house.
⚡Learnings & Challenges
Supabase’s free tier pauses projects after 7 days of inactivity;
Lovable tends to apply changes automatically after prompts unless you intentionally use chat-only mode;
and there’s no obvious versioning, so it’s easy for AI-driven changes to introduce regressions without an easy rollback.
🧠 Food for Thought:
Vibe coding apps like Lovable empower all of us to create apps that perfectly suit our needs. I wonder how this might impact app stores and companies in the future, when I don’t need to pay for an app/SaaS when I can build my own that 100% meets my needs.
